Henry Coates grabs lead in Group C after first matches in MODUS Super Series

Henry Coates seized the lead Thursday after the first five games in Group C during the fourth week of play in the 10th season of the MODUS Super Series in Portsmouth.

Coates only lost his match against Justin Smith (4-3), and managed to win his matches against Ultan McDyer (4-0), Patrick Dekker (4-1), Luke Smith (4-1) and Mason Whitlock (4-1). This puts him on eight points after the first day of play.

Following Coates are Justin Smith, Mason Whitlock and Ultan McDyer, all of whom are on six points after five matches. Patrick Dekker is the number four ranked player with four points, while Luke Smith is still scoreless.

The MODUS Super Series is a weekly tournament with 12 players competing from Monday through Friday for a spot in the final group, which takes place on Saturday night. A week of play begins with six players competing in Group A. They play against each other once each on the first three days of play. The winner of this pool is directly through to finals night.

The numbers two and three will enter Group B with three new players. They will play each other on Thursday and Friday, after which the top three of this group may also prepare to participate in the final night. The numbers four, five and six from Group A will advance to Group C, where they too will be joined by three other players. Two more players from this pool will advance to the final night.

The final night is played on Saturday night starting at 10 p.m. where players compete in a small group stage with two groups of three players, followed by semi-finals and a final to determine the weekly winner. After twelve weeks of competition, all the weekly winners compete in "Champions Week," which is played every thirteen weeks of play to determine who wins the series and takes home the top prize of 25,000 pounds.
