Shane McGuirk has won the fourth week of the MODUS Super Series. The Irishman crowned himself Saturday night as overall winner by dealing with Dutchman Danny van Trijp in the final: 4-2. With this victory McGuirk qualifies for Champions Week, where he can compete for the overall victory and a grand prize of £25,000 later this season.
The final day began with the group stage, in which the six remaining players were divided into two groups. In Group A, Danny van Trijp took the lead. The Dutchman won both his matches to secure a spot in the semifinals. He started with a 4-2 win over Henry Coates, after which he also beat Richie Howson 4-1. Coates had already beaten Howson 4-2 earlier in the evening, allowing him to advance to the knockout stage as number two.
In Group B, it was Shane McGuirk who made the strongest impression. The Irishman started with a 4-2 victory over Brandon Weening and completed his group win with a convincing 4-0 victory over Justin Smith. Weening still managed to reach the semifinals with a narrow 4-3 victory over Smith.
Danny van Trijp had to go deep against Brandon Weening in the first semi-final, but eventually managed to win 4-3 to secure a final spot. In the other semi-final Shane McGuirk continued his advance. He was 4-1 too strong for Henry Coates and could prepare for the decisive match against Van Trijp.
In the final between Danny van Trijp and Shane McGuirk, it was the Irishman who was in control. McGuirk played a solid match and managed to beat the Dutchman 4-2. With that, he crowned a strong evening and secured himself a spot in Champions Week, where he may compete for the ultimate title in the MODUS Super Series later in the season.
The MODUS Super Series is a weekly tournament with 12 players competing from Monday through Friday for a spot in the final group, which takes place on Saturday night. A week of play begins with six players competing in Group A. They play against each other once each on the first three days of play. The winner of this group is directly through to finals night.
The numbers two and three will enter Group B with three new players. They will play each other on Thursday and Friday, after which the top three of this group may also prepare to participate in the final night. The numbers four, five and six from Group A advance to Group C, where they too will be joined by three other players. Two more players from this group will advance to the final night.
The final night is played on Saturday night starting at 10 p.m. where players compete in a small group stage with two groups of three players, followed by semi-finals and a final to determine the weekly winner. After twelve weeks of competition, all the weekly winners compete in "Champions Week," which is played every thirteen weeks of play to determine who wins the series and takes home the top prize of 25,000 pounds.
