The second day of action at the WDF Scottish Open in Renfrew saw the final lineups confirmed for both the Men’s and Women’s Scottish Classic, as well as the Boys and Girls Open events. Find out who's still in the fight right here!
In the Men’s event, it will be former Welsh Open champion Martyn Turner taking on first time WDF event finalist and home hope Stuart Wares to become champion and significantly improve their chances of reaching Lakeside.
Turner was dominant throughout the day, only dropping a leg a match on average and averaging as high as 92.49 in the last 64. He faced no real opposition until the semi finals where, despite averaging a point lower, the Englishman took care of an impressive Mitchell Lawrie 5-2.
It was a very encouraging day on the other half of the draw for Wares, with the Scotsman taking out a host of big names in the WDF system, such as Bradley Kirk, Alec Small who impressed on the MODUS Super Series recently, and reigning champion Glen Parsons in the semi finals to reach a maiden WDF ranked final.
Elsewhere throughout the day, neither of yesterday's Doubles title winners Jim McEwan or former Lakeside champion Neil Duff went far in the singles with Duff losing to Steve Buchan in the Last 128 and McEwan falling to Derek Jackson in the Last 64. It was also a day to forget for the only player at the event to have just fallen off the PDC Pro Tour, as Christian Perez lost in the Last 64 to Ryan Hogarth.
Meanwhile, Scotland’s Lorraine Hyde will be the overwhelming favourite to win her home event for the first time, as the world number 5 takes on England’s Julie Thompson. It was a depleted female field today due to a clash with the PDC Women’s Series but that didn’t stop some high quality play with Hyde, the highest ranked player in the event, forced all the way on two occasions by compatriot Susanna McGimpey in the last 16 and the inimitable Paula Jacklin in the semi final stage. Despite facing significant pressure throughout the event so far, she asserted herself as the best player of the day and deservedly reaches a second final in as many days, following up on her Doubles title yesterday.
On the other side of the draw, Thompson grew into the event as the day went on, with an especially strong performance against Irina Armstrong in the quarter finals, with the German taking her to a last leg decider in a highly entertaining match. From then on it was plain sailing as the world number 141 faced little competition in the semi final and whitewashed fellow Englishwoman Kelly Haverson, setting up a meeting with Hyde tomorrow evening, looking to avenge herself for her loss to Hyde and Louise Paterson in the Doubles final yesterday.
Meanwhile, Sophie McKinlay’s horror weekend continued as the double Lakeside finalist followed up her first round doubles loss with a last leg defeat to Kelly Jolly, and Hyde’s Doubles partner Louise Paterson lost in the last 32 to losing semi-finalist Kelly Haverson.
In the youth events, the massive shock of the day is that pre-tournament favourite Daniel Stephenson has not made the Boys final. He was knocked out in the semi finals by a sublime Luke Rossi who will face Taylor McGuckian in yet another Scotland vs England final tomorrow, whilst Jessica Matheson ran the card in the Girls Group Stages winning all 5 games to book her place in the final tomorrow against Taylor Field to make it a Battle of Britain in all 4 events.
The finals of each event will take place tomorrow from 4:30pm alongside the finals for the Scottish Open, also silver ranked, which begins tomorrow morning from 10am at the Normandy Hotel in Renfrew. Scores can be followed on DartConnect whilst the finals will be live-streamed on the Tri Nations Darts YouTube channel.
