Van Gerwen averaged 101.7 as he won a second Players Championship title in a row. The win also marked his first ever competitive meeting with Australian sensation Cadby. It was the world number one who started off the better of the two, breaking the Cadby throw early on. A 101 checkout put van Gerwen 2-0 up. Cadby had tops to break back instantly, but missed his opportunity and was subsequently punished. Mighty Mike was in a ruthless mood. When the young Australian missed two darts to hold, he checked out 88 to take a 4-0 advantage.
The fifth leg saw Cadby finally get a leg on the board. Van Gerwen narrowly missed bull for a 170 checkout, before the King's attempt at double 16 for a 102 finish went wide of its target. But the Dutchman missed two darts to go 5-0 up in a rare show of charity, allowing his opponent to guarantee that he would not be whitewashed. A 13-darter in the sixth leg to break Cadby back quickly extinguished the Aussie's hopes of a comeback. A second 13-darter concluded the tie in speedy fashion, and compounded van Gerwen's Players Championship dominance. The Dutchman extends his Pro Tour Order of Merit lead, after yet another tournament win in 2018. He adds two Players Championship victories to the Masters and two of the six UK Open qualifiers.
