May 4th isn't just for Star Wars fans. There's more darts action in store, with the European Darts Grand Prix.
The
European Tour has produced three winners this season, two of whom were surprise packages. Jonny Clayton joined Max Hopp and Michael van Gerwen in the winner's circle last time out. The Austrian Darts Open champion hasn't even qualified for the European Darts Grand Prix. 48 hopefuls have made it, minus the ill Adrian Lewis and plus a fifth home nations qualifier. Will Peter Wright retain his title in Sindelfingen? Could van Gerwen or Hopp strike again? Or will we see a new hope emerge in Germany?
The afternoon session begins with former world youth champion Arron Monk. The Englishman kicks off his European Tour campaign against compatriot Peter Hudson, who also makes his first European appearance of the season. Madars Razma has appeared already. The imposing Latvian takes on the Muffin Man, Steve Hine. Dimitri van den Bergh hasn't set the world alight yet in 2018, but there have been some signs of it. The Belgian's next task is seeing off Matt Padgett. Vincent van der Voort qualified on Thursday evening, and his reward is a meeting with Steve Lennon. The Irishman has become somewhat of a European regular.
The German faithful have two favourites to back on Friday afternoon.
The second half of the session begins with a meeting between two highly talented Europeans. Gabriel Clemens performed well at Players Championship 10 last weekend. The German has been tipped for big things, and perhaps that will start in Sindelfingen. His first hurdle is a significant one; Jan Dekker is one of the most clinical players around on his day. Stephen Bunting, like Clemens, put on a decent Players Championship run. His quest for momentum starts against Kirk Shepherd. The winner meets defending champion Wright on Saturday. Alan Tabern has done well for himself in the European Tour, and he'll be hopeful of another decent run. His first round opponent is debutant Mats Gies. The dubious 'prize' for winning is a second round meeting with van Gerwen. In the final tie of the afternoon, homegrown hero Martin Schindler clashes with Robert Owen.
Play is live on
PDC TV, and begins at 12pm.
