Day one of the
German Darts Open looked set to be a fairly humdrum affair. But then, a saviour emerged.
Steve Beaton piling in the third European Tour nine-darter of the season lit up the tournament. Now, we enter round two hoping for more fireworks.
Play begins with Darren Webster looking to score a win over Vincent van der Meer, who will need to improve greatly on the performance which saw him edge past Karsten Koch. A seed in a more vulnerable position is German Darts Grand Prix runner-up Simon Whitlock. Jamie Hughes is a seriously dangerous player, and Whitlock's Munich outing doesn't make him immune to an early exit here.
Joe Cullen will be looking to brush off enigmatic Dutch ace Jerry Hendriks, before Daryl Gurney's tournament begins against David Pallett. On the occasions James Richardson appeared on the
European Tour last year, he was able to make it through to Sunday. Adrian Lewis will be out to avoid a repeat at the German Darts Open.
Then comes the man of the hour - of any hour. Steve Beaton remains indomitable, a nine-dart hero at the age of 55. Tremble in fear, Gerwyn Price, for this is the age of bronze.
OK, that's a bit far. But Price will be wary of an opponent who is clearly in good form.
Ian White faces a seriously tricky second round game. Jeffrey de Zwaan
saw off Kyle Anderson without breaking a sweat, and will not fear the second seed. Another player with momentum behind him is Luke Humphries. A
whitewash win over Pavel Jirkal makes him well placed to give James Wade a major headache.
