Gurney continues Van Gerwen's World Series woes as he sets up grudge match with Cross in Brisbane

Daryl Gurney has continued Michael van Gerwen's World Series woes with his wait for a first title of the season on the tour still ongoing after an 8-5 victory for the Northern Irishman at the Brisbane Darts Masters.

Van Gerwen showed signs he was returning to his old ruthless self averaging 130 in the early going but Gurney kept his cool despite a late stutter to move through to a grudge match with Rob Cross who produced a brilliant comeback to defeat him at the World Matchplay.

Van Gerwen came out the traps really well going 2-1 up including a ten and eleven darter to take the early initiative but despite that and averaging 130, Gurney levelled at 2-2 with a brilliant 121 on the bull.

MVG started to have a problem which has blighted him in recent weeks and that is in the doubles and Gurney as a result went 3-2 up.

He continued his dominance and made it five consecutive legs on the bounce to make it truly one way traffic for 'Superchin'. The question was due to previous meetings between the pair, was Gurney going to falter?

Van Gerwen began to answer that claiming back-to-back legs and clawing proceedings back to only 6-4 behind but Gurney went one away at 7-4 with a 14 darter as he held his nerve.

He held his nerve further by having a brilliant leg to edge past Van Gerwen and set up the aforementioned grudge match with Rob Cross in the semi-finals.
