Gurney stokes Taylor row: 'He's just old and grumphy and looking to pick fights'

Daryl Gurney has hit back at Phil Taylor. The pair met in the Quarter finals of last weeks Grand Slam, a match surrounded by needle in the accompanying interviews, in which Taylor came out on top. Before the meeting, The 16-time world champion appeared to start playing mind games by suggesting up and coming Gurney wasn't the future of the sport. And the 57 year old wasn't finished there, again showing distaste towards the Northern Irishman in his post match interview. This time taking offence to Gurney not pouring him a glass of water despite Taylor walking on first. Now though, the current world number 4 has hit back at the retiring Taylor in an interview with the Derry Journal. “I’ve never said anything bad about him. I just didn’t pour him water. I always said he was the greatest, the best and a legend. “But as far as I’m concerned now I only have to look at him for one more tournament and then he’s retiring at the end of the Worlds. I might not be the future of darts but he’s definitely the past and I’m happy about that! “I’m sure he wishes he was 20 years younger but the standard today is much better than the standard when he was winning everything in the ‘90s. He was the only person who could do 100 averages and everyone else was averaging 95 or 96 so that’s probably why he won so easily. “He’s going to retire now which is a good decision because I think he’s just getting old and grumpy and looking to pick fights with random players.” With just the World Championships left before Taylor calls time on his career, will we see these to battle it out once more?
