The Highlander
John Henderson is into the second round of the World Championships. The big Scot defeated
Marko Kantele in straight sets, in a very scrappy tie, to progress at Ally Pally.
The match wasnt much to shout about overall, and wont go down in the memory of many as a World Championship classic, but there were two moments of note.
The first leg was won by Henderson in a rather un-spectacular 22 dart leg. He backed that up with a 17 against the throw of the Fin. The pair traded 180's in the third set where it was Kantele that reached the double first. A first time hit for Marko got him on the board. And the Finnish World Cup player took the following leg as well. A clean 62 finish and a 2 from 2 on the doubles for a level fist set. Henderson then produced a moment of brilliance to seal the set. A 160 out.
The second set started in a familiar fashion. A scrappy opening leg taken in 21 darts. Kantele missing a dart at D20 for the leg. He probably should have had more in the leg after hitting his second 180 of the match, especially on his own throw. Hendo backed up his first leg break with a 15 dart hold for the second leg. The Highlander wrapped up the set with another moment of brilliance. A 121 finish and a 12 dart leg.
Henderson wrapped up the third set 3-1. Legs of 17, 15 and 18. Kantele managing a hold of his throw in leg 2, but was unable to repeat the feat at the second attempt to force a set deciding leg.
John Henderson will face Daryl Gurney in the next round. He'll hope to exact some revenge on the Northern Irishman that knocked him out of the Gran Prix this year. Especially after Henderson had just defeated world number 1 Michael van Gerwen.
