John Henderson pulled off a shock up there with when Phil Taylor fell to Andy Callaby in 2004 by knocking out the defending champion
Michael van Gerwen 2-1 in sets. The 'Highlander' averaged over ten points less than the World Number One but his double in was the key and he goes through to the next round.
Henderson took an early lead taking out a 41 checkout before missing a 140 checkout but he came back for the madhouse to go within 1 of claiming the first set.
Van Gerwen came smashing back though breaking the throw of the Highlander pinning D9 for 2-1. He continued on hitting a 48 checkout to make it 2-2. Henderson despite not looking great made MVG pay for taking 8 darts to get in and won the first set which could mean a huge shock.
Van Gerwen returned and hit a 32 checkout to hold and hit tops to break to look likely to pull level against Henderson which he did winning 3-0.
Henderson did get a foothold in the deciding set though, hitting D10 after MVG missed D18. MVG held his thorw on tops to make it 1-1. A wild dart by Hendo when going for a finish wasn't punished and Hendo went 2-1 up on the verge of victory.
Van Gerwen sent it to a decider hitting D18. Henderson then went on to shock the darting world by knocking out MVG with a 52 checkout to win 2-1!
