Unterbuchner added to wins over David Cameron and Jamie Hughes with a comfortable success over the 14th seed. Having been the first German to win at the
Lakeside, Unterbuchner is now the nation's first quarter-finalist.
The Munich man was solid, if not spectacular, as he opened up a 2-0 lead. A 102 checkout and the first of five match 180s put him half way to victory. But the 57-year-old refused to give in, and battled back to make it 2-2. The crucial third set, which went to a decider, went Phillips' way. That gave him the vital momentum needed to extend the tie.
But Unterbuchner came roaring back. A match average of 88.88 and a personal tournament-best checkout rate of 45 per cent saw him home. Next up for the giant-beater is Geert de Vos or Richard Veenstra.
