The Milton Keynes tournament, which brings together the world's best players, has been staged five times. The Dutchman has won three of them, all in a row. Mighty Mike could reassert his dominance of this event by making it four on the spin this weekend. After a stunning defeat to Rob Cross in the World Championship semi-final, van Gerwen will be keen to start 2018 in style.
Right now, his focus is only on The Masters, and a first round meeting with Kim Huybrechts.
"It would be wonderful to win this tournament again, but I can't look that far ahead yet," van Gerwen claimed.
"It's a fantastic tournament and it's important for every player because we all want to start the year well and this is the first one."
The two-time world champion did have time to mention his Ally Pally performance. But van Gerwen insisted that he has taken nothing but positives from an ultimately unsuccessful tournament.
"I've had a break and I'm feeling good, and I'm looking forward to playing again. I think I'm still in good form and I showed that in the World Championship, but I've got to make sure I prepare for every game," he said.
