Saturday evening at the German Darts Grand Prix looks set to be a real treat.
Of course, it's always a treat when Steve Beaton's about. We're helped to a nice dose of the Bronzed Adonis right from the get-go in Munich. He meets fellow Englishman Nathan Derry. Following that match, we welcome Alan Norris back to the stage, as the former German Darts Championship winner seeks German Darts Grand Prix success. His opponent, Stephen Bunting, was a quarter-finalist in the last edition of the German Darts Championship, under a month ago. There's always one pair that have to play off for the dubious pleasure of meeting Michael van Gerwen. This time, it's Krzysztof Ratajski and Martin Schindler. It should be an interesting tie between two highly talented players who are yet to really get going in 2019. Chris Dobey plays Michael Rasztovits in the fourth game, with the winner to take on Rob Cross on Sunday. Then another of the home nations qualifiers, Dragutin Horvat, comes up against Kim Huybrechts. The most in-form German in world darts has been drawn against one of the most in-form players on the European Tour. Gabriel Clemens is likely to go the distance in one of these events at some point. He won't find it easy here, taking on German Darts Championship runner-up Ricky Evans. For most, the penultimate match is the tie of the evening. Not so long ago, Jamie Hughes and Glen Durrant were two big fish in the BDO pond. Now they're both PDC players, and after a big payday in Europe. Whoever battles through what should be a high quality clash then has to play Joe Cullen, and possibly Adrian Lewis in the third round. Nobody said this European Tour lark was easy. Cristo Reyes could have had a tougher draw, mind. The Iberian ace will be eyeing up a second round clash with Simon Whitlock. First he's in for a world of Hurtz. Michael Hurtz, the final German qualifier, has never made it to the Sunday of a European Tour weekend. Is now his time? No, probably. - One mistake is often followed by another, and the PDC have compounded their unimaginative PL picks with a doppelganger cast for the World Series. What an opportunity missed. It hurts the overburdened eight, it hurts the overlooked, it hurts the fans. Who gains? No one I can think of, not even the PDC shareholders.

Although he is charismatic and has personality unlike the boring and dull as dishwater Dobey. It is quite pathetic and desperate the way Bunting and Arsepinall pander to the crowd to dance to their walk on music, that has worked though. I would like to see more players involved on a weekly basis similar to the Modus Super Series. A knockout tournament with 16 winners from each week. - I'm glad wright and van Ben bergh were overlooked. Too much dancing,not enough darting. Bunting is always quality,as for price,he's a crowd pleaser(!!?) too. Aspinall has had his problems,but it's nice to see him back,he's a decent chap. Dobey is a top player,big hitter,so I won't complain. Cross will finish bottom,much as I like him,he seems to be off lately. I'm glad they didn't pick a Belgian just for the audience. But I don't agree with the tournament or format,so I guess it's immaterial to me. They might as well turn up at a random pub and play for the beers!!!rick6707-01-2025
- I think the PDC's choice is too conservative. EIther or both of Damon Heta and Mike de Dekker should have been in, at the expense of Aspinall and possibly Price. I guess the PDC's reasoning is that they do not want too much turnover from year to year, and so having already rejected Smith and Wright, they have kept Price and Aspinall, but I guess those two are "on probation".UndartedWaters06-01-2025
