'Favourite' isn't a tag that could be used to describe Toni Alcinas or Benito van de Pas. Yet here they are, a mere three wins away from the World Championship semi-finals. None of their potential opponents are in the world's top 20, either. in the biggest shock so far. , but after a year of sliding down the PDC Order of Merit, it was huge. It could get even better for the precocious Dutchman, if he can find the magic that has been missing for so long. If there's any time to find that magic, it's now.
The last four players on the Ally Pally stage on Thursday have six world titles between them. Chris Dobey can't claim any - yet. But the 28-year-old wants to be thought of as a contender. To prove his worth, Hollywood needs to steal the limelight from Gary Anderson. The Flying Scotsman was pushed to the very end by Jermaine Wattimena. If he's not careful Dobey, a man who has beaten some experienced opponents, could cause a major surprise.
Michael van Gerwen, to use a technical term, is on it. Only two players have averaged three figures in consecutive games; Mighty Mike, and the defending world champion, Rob Cross. Whether he meets Cross in the final remains to be seen. The Dutchman better beware Adrian Lewis first. It wasn't that long ago that it seemed that Jackpot, having won two world titles on the bounce, would inherit Phil Taylor's crown and rule the darting world. It hasn't happened. But it doesn't mean that Lewis can't return to the summit. This one will be fast, furious, and very influential as far as determining the identity of the 2019 champion goes.
