Gerwyn Price has reached the World Championship last 16 for the first time in his career after a commanding 4-1 victory over Ian White. The world number 16 opened the second round with seven 180s and two ton-plus checkouts. Price will now return to the Ally Pally stage after Christmas for a potential tie with Michael van Gerwen.
Price roared into an early lead in the first set, taking out 102 despite White hitting the opening 180. It was clear from the offset that White was struggling with his line, but his usual solid double-hitting meant the set went to a decider. But the Iceman kept his cool, with a 114 checkout enough to give him the early advantage.
The Welshman looked in complete control as he immediately broke White in the second set, with the Stoke thrower somehow busting 121. But the Diamond responded with a superb 151 checkout to level matters. White was able to take the set to a final leg again, but again his erratic darts cost him. Price, then with a 66% success rate on doubles, took a commanding lead.
The third set was a see-saw affair, with the first three legs all going against the throw. In the last of the three, Price had given himself a gilt-edged opportunity to set himself up for a 3-0 lead with consecutive 180s. But the UK Open finalist managed to miss five darts at a double, allowing White to pounce. The 17th seed was able to hold off the man one place superior in the fourth leg, giving him a way back into the game.
But White's scoring was not enough to sustain a decent comeback. Price took his maximum count to six in the fourth set, galloping into a 2-0 lead before White managed to get a leg on the board. Nerves never seemed a problem for the Welshman, and a 3-1 set victory meant Price was three legs away from a very happy Christmas. It was never in doubt, either. White held throw once but could not covert double four to stay in the contest. A cool Price checked out 97 to seal a 4-1 win with a 96.93 average.
