Robert Thornton was the first man into the
World Grand Prix Quarter Finals. The 2015 winner who has been in the darting doldrums since then returned to form building on his 1st round win to take out
Dave Chisnall 3-2 in a deciding set.
Thornton swiftly got into the match with two cracks at tops to make it 2-0 to the Thorn in the early goings and he made it even better by winning the first set by 3 legs to 0 with a 104.8 average.
Chisnall came back and hit D18 to continue his 100% record on finishing doubles so far in the tournament and start the second set with a lead. Thornton though put heed to that record and after Chizzy missed three at tops, Thornton returned to hit D4 for 1-1.
Chisnall came back to hit D18 to make it 2-1 to the St Helens ace. He then took out 100 to wrap up the set at 1-1.
Thornton didn't let this phase him and hit a 123 checkout to take the first leg of the second set. Chizzy though moved 2-1 up breaking the Thornton throw to potentially go one set away from a quarter-final place.
The Thorn sent it to a deciding leg in the next leg hitting a 90 finish on the bullseye to break back. Chisnall though secured the set with a brilliant 130 checkout to grab a 2-1 set lead.
Thornton grab a key break hitting an 80 checkout to get the opening leg. Chisnall responded like he has done in most of this match hitting a 116 checkout to make it 1-1. Thornton did the same in the following leg by taking out 101 to lead 2-1.
He followed that up by securing the fourth set to force a decider. Thornton missed multiple chances in the first leg of the decider and Chisnall snatched the leg on D1.
Horrible finishing allowed Thornton a route into the final set and he capitalised winning the match in a deciding leg to snatch the win.
