GRANDPRIX RD1 GURNEY3
Daryl Gurney kept his hopes of winning his first major title alive after defeating Joe Cullen 3-1 in the World Grand Prix. 'Superchin' played well in front of his home support and will be hoping to convert that into a title win if he can to the final.
Gurney started off well by wrapping up the first set 3-1 after both men were 1-1, Gurney won the set with 3/3 on the doubles and a 103 average to start off proceedings.
Cullen started the second set by hitting a 177 and finishing on D2 in the end to win the first leg but despite pressuring Gurney took out 107 for it to be one a piece.
Cullen fought back and hit an even bigger checkout of 116 to lead 2-1. Gurney came back in the following leg to make his doubling 5/5 hitting a 74 checkout to make it 2-2.
He continued that flawless finishing inning the second set to go one set away from winning the match. Cullen start the third set with a maximum and then a 73 finish to claim the first leg.
He continued on in that vein winning the third set without reply to make it 2-1.
Cullen started well in the final set converting D8, Gurney though then smashed in a 127 checkout on the bull to punish missed doubles from Cullen. He then took out a 72 checkout before getting the win 3-1 to get to the last eight.
