Anderson was of course not at 100% and Beaton took it as an opportunity to roll back the years and produce a stunning victory.
With this win and Van Gerwen losing it really makes the title there for the taking and players such as Rob Cross, Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price will be looking on thinking it might be their year.
Raymond van Barneveld is another player to have fallen with him losing to Simon Stevenson. ‘Barney’ once again failed to impress in a major tournament and will be gutted at losing out on some potentially vital ranking money.
Steve Lennon and Jermaine Wattimena are through to tomorrow to continue their impressive starts to 2019 and will be players that will definitely go under the radar but could make a big impact as the weekend goes on.
Speaking of impressive, Jamie Hughes is through as well once again for a second year in a row to the Last 32 and in doing so he avenged his defeat to Ian White twelve months ago.
There is one match to go on each of the boards before the draw takes place for Saturday’s action with Van Gerwen, Anderson and Van Barneveld not involved.
