He spoke afterwards to Live Darts and said that it wasn’t his best performance. He also said that it was a tough match against Lim, because the crowd were behind him.
“I wouldn’t say it was my best performance. I think it’s my first win on a PDC TV event so it’s probably why I released a bit of emotion to be honest. It was a tough game because I felt I was playing Paul Lim and the crowd in a way,” said Smith.
On the draw to face Paul Lim and the match itself, Smith said that it was tough. He knew the crowd would be behind Lim so he just tried to concentrate on his own game.
“It was tough, totally respectful fantastic player. I knew the crowd would be on his side and tried to concentrate on my own game and do the best I can.”
Smith also spoke about his return to the game after a spell out. He said that he fell out of love with it but that he’s now loving it again.
“I packed in for two years. It wasn’t down to me playing badly, I just fell out of love with the game. When I found out I qualified, I broke down in tears at the service station on the way home, that’s how much it meant to me.”
“I’ve come back and I’m loving it again and can’t be happier, it’s done me good.”
He added: “I’ve got so much more in me so it’s just taking it from that game on to the stage which is easily said than done but I believe in myself.”
