He saw off Michael Smith in a repeat of the Premier League and World Championship Final with a 109 average.
This was in a 8-3 win for Mighty Mike who hit 62 percent on his doubles with Smith playing his part averaging 100.
Van Gerwen started brilliantly as he always does going 4-0 up and threatening the world record with a 121 average.
This gave Smith no chance but he stuck with the task in hand.
He hit a 12 darter to go 4-1 behind with a 108 average himself.
Van Gerwen surged further to a 6-1 lead but Smith hit double 20 in a break then held to make it 6-3 to maintain his footing.
Despite that though a 14 darter allowed MVG to go one away and he duly obliged to claim the win.
Cross remains top of the pile but Van Gerwen is right behind him as a brilliant start to the second phase continues.
