It's been a wonderful 2018 for Gary Anderson and he added yet another TV title to his collection courtesy of a memorable success over Peter Wright in the Champions League of Darts.
Anderson's position in the current
PDC Order of Merit remains unmoved due to the competition being a non-ranking event but Anderson will hope to use his success as a springboard.
Gary Anderson has already been victorious in the World Matchplay and the 47-year old's remarkable twelve months continued with an outstanding victory in Brighton. He was 7/2 second favourite to win the tournament and his price shortened prior to the competition getting underway. The market was hugely competitive in the days preceding the tournament and with for events such as the Champions League, it meant that Anderson was well-supported by fans and punters alike.
Champions League Success
The affable Scot told reporters that following his triumph. He had already beaten reigning champion Mensur Suljovic and Michael Van Gerwen en-route to the final, helping set up a Scottish showdown with Peter Wright. Anderson admitted that he "...struggled at times but came good in the end". Wright admitted that he just "ran out of steam" and wasn't able to match the high standards of his opponent. Snakebite told reporters that "Gary is the man to beat at the moment..." and it almost certainly won't be the last time that the pair cross swords. Anderson didn't just wait until the final to produce his best performance of the weekend, with in the semis particularly eye-catching.
Looking Ahead
Anderson is targetting a fifth televised title of 2018 at the World Grand Prix. He is currently behind Rob Cross and Peter Wright in the PDC Order of Merit and is significantly adrift of Michael Van Gerwen. Although he still has some way to go in order to topple the Dutchman, he is the highest-earner of 2018 and would be the clear leader if it was solely based on this year's prize money.
Anderson remains modest and has partly attributed his success to the fact that MVG hasn't been able to continue his domination of the sport. He also confessed that he's been "riding his luck" recently, although anyone who watched him in Brighton is likely to disagree with that assessment.
He has enjoyed some good fortune along the way but Gary Anderson's current form is no fluke and the Scot is hoping to continue his terrific 2018. He will be looking to close the gap at the top of the PDC Order of Merit and looks in prime condition heading into a crucial part of the season.
