Raymond van Barneveld came out on top in a dazzling German Darts Masters quarter-final against Gary Anderson, with ruthless double-hitting to thank for a 10-8 win.
The opening legs went with throw, and a 121 checkout on the bull helped the world number two to a 3-2 lead at the first interval. Barney came roaring back, though, and sealed the first break on double 16 after a timely 180 to move 4-3 in front.
The Dutchman’s dead-eye doubling threatened to take him clear, but Anderson bounced back with an 84 checkout on the bull, followed by a superb 132. Inspired by the Scot’s fightback, van Barneveld kicked off the 11th leg with seven perfect darts, nailing the double 16 again to go 6-5 up.
Once again, Barney went two legs clear, but Anderson repeated his trick of claiming the next two legs to make it 7-7. For the first time since the opening break, the Flying Scotsman took the lead, but an 80 finish under pressure brought van Barneveld level.
A moment of magic put the five-time world champion back in front; a 150 checkout sealed a break, and tops sealed the victory with a 71 per cent success rate on the doubles. Next up for van Barneveld is a semi-final tie against Mensur Suljovic or Peter Wright.
