Three months before the start of the PDC World Darts Championship, Peter Wright pushed himself forward as the number one favourite for the world title.

''I am going to be world champion this year, says 'Snakebite' in conversation with the PDC. "I know how to beat Michael van Gerwen, it is a matter of when the right Peter Wright is coming back." During the last edition of the World Championship, Wright lost in the second round to Jamie Lewis, who went on to reach the semi-finals in Alexandra Palace. Ahead of that tournament, the world number two was also very confident about his chances. ''I'm not afraid of Van Gerwen'', he said last year. However, the 2017 UK Open champion got health problems and had to at the hospital. ''I was quite worried at that time and that is why I did not practice every day. And if you do not do that anymore, it will be at the expense of your routine and ultimately of your game.''
