While Jonny Clayton took the trophy at Players Championship 14 on Tuesday afternoon in Rosmalen, the real story lies in the numbers - and they tell a tale of clinical finishing, red-hot form, and a few standout performances that didn’t make it all the way to the final.
It was Clayton himself who set the pace early, blowing past England’s George Killington in round one with a jaw-dropping average of 111.16 - the highest of the day. That wasn’t a one-off either: in the final against Germany’s Dominik Gruellich, "The Ferret" backed it up with a 109.68 average, the second-best of the tournament. Deadly stuff from the 50-year-old Welshman, who made it crystal clear he’s found his rhythm again, having already shown glimpes earlier this year in making the final of the inaugural PDC Winmau World Masters and the semi-finals of the UK Open in the early part of 2025.
But he wasn’t the only one lighting up the board. Far from it in fact.
Dutchman Dirk van Duijvenbode posted the third-highest average of the day, 109.05, in a 6–2 demolition of Scotland’s Cameron Menzies in the last 32. Van Duijvenbode looked sharp and dangerous - until missed match darts in the quarter-finals saw him narrowly edged out by Gruellich.
Another Dutch talent, Wessel Nijman, quietly put in one of the day’s most underrated performances. His 106.49 average in a nail-biting 6–5 victory over Germany’s Gabriel Clemens was good enough for fourth-highest overall. Though he eventually bowed out in the last 32 to James Wade, Nijman showed glimpses of the form that’s had darts insiders buzzing.
With the Players Championship now on a brief hiatus until May 12–13 in Hildesheim, fans have time to digest the numbers - and maybe ask the question: on form alone, who would you fear facing next?
