The numbers from Players Championship 13 leave little room for doubt: the standard was exceptionally high. With an average of no less than 118.66, Englishman
Andrew Gilding delivered the standout performance of the day. Such averages are rarely produced on the Pro Tour and underline how sharp he was. It’s a display that impresses not only on paper but also sends a clear message to the field.
Van Duijvenbode in second as Edhouse, Cross also impress
Behind Gilding, Dirk van Duijvenbode followed with a 109.10 average. The Dutchman once again confirmed his reputation as one of the circuit’s most prolific scorers. His compatriot Jermaine Wattimena also appeared multiple times on the list, pointing to a strong and above all consistent day.
Chris Dobey also posted two averages over 102 and thereby just squeezes into the top five as well. Just outside the top five is Doets with two 100+ averages. The 28-year-old Dutchman will hardly lose sleep over that, though, as far more important for him was securing his
first PDC ranking title by defeating Luke Woodhouse 8-5 in the final.
Other top names on the list included Ritchie Edhouse who posted 104.87, while James Hurrell hit 103.93 and Rob Cross also hit 102.72. Mensur Suljovic was also on the money pinning 102.48.
Depth of quality on show
What this edition of Players Championship 13 especially highlights is how much the depth at the top of darts has increased. Where one or two players used to stand out, we now see a whole group consistently averaging over 100. That bodes well for the upcoming majors, where this kind of form is often decisive for success.
The Players Championship resumes this afternoon, with the fourteenth event of the year on the schedule in Hildesheim.
