The second round was on the menu on Saturday afternoon at the
Austrian Darts Open and it was a session that had it all with superb displays and even a nine-dart finish from Cristo Reyes. That is where we start.
Reyes who only returned to the tour albeit with much fanfare earlier in the year has hit multiple nine-dart finishes but none on a big stage like this and he managed to prevail 6-4 over Damon Heta to reach the final day at the
Austrian Darts Open.
Albeit his nine-darter was semi out of the blue, he was averaging mid 70's and it proved to be a catalyst. They both broke early with Reyes hitting double 16 for 1-0. Reyes responded with a 55 checkout for 1-1 but Heta then went ahead again with a 21-darter for 2-1. But back came Reyes with his nine-dart finish and then he broke for 3-2 which proved to be the vital moments.
He then held with Heta missing 114 for a break. A 77 checkout for a 12-darter and an 11 darter on double 20 then sealed it for the Spaniard.
Huybrechts thrills as Ross Smith impresses
Kim Huybrechts also prevailed over Chris Dobey in a thrilling 6-5 win to end the session with a 132 on the bull to claim the win. It was breaks to start the tie for the first few legs. Dobey hit double 14 but Huybrechts hit back with a 12-darter on double 16. Dobey though hit a 13-darter on double 14 to lead 2-1.
A 21 darter on double one from Dobey but Huybrechts hit 58 for 3-2. Huybrechts hit double eight to break back and he followed with double 10 for 4-3. Dobey broke for 5-4 with an 82 checkout but Huybrechts pinned double 16 for a 10-darter to send it all the way where he had the throw. But Huybrechts produced an incredible 132 checkout on the bull to win.
Ross Smith dazzled too with 'Smudger' managing to take down the in-form Niels Zonneveld hitting three 180's and a 102 average. Smudger towards peak of his powers.
It could've been even more comfortable than 6-3 too. He surged into a 3-0 lead breaking on double eight. He hit double 16 with a 12-darter. He held on double four for 4-1. He broke again with a 12-darter on double 12. But back came Zonneveld with a 12-darter himself on double 19. Smith missed a match dart and Smith returned for double four.
Andrew Gilding opened the session and was ultra impressive as he averaged a ton to see off Jermaine Wattimena. Going 3-1 up early, he was pegged back as Wattimena hit a 14-darter on double 16 for 3-3. But back came Gilding. He surged after Wattimena missed 131 and he pinned 64 to go 4-3 up. He later hit a 13-darter for double 19 and then completed the deal with a 12-darter on double 18.
Rob Cross is also through after downing William O'Connor. A game of little to no breaks, Cross went 3-2 and 4-3 up but pivotally he hit an 11-darter on double 18 for 5-3 to break for a 66 checkout.
He then hit double six after he initially missed 112 for the match. Also through included Kevin Doets who continues his exceptional form. He saw off Ryan Searle for the first time 6-2. While Luke Woodhouse eased past Robert Owen 6-1. Ryan Joyce also made light work of Mike de Decker to also make the final day.
