Michael van Gerwen is through to the semi-finals at the Players Championship Finals in Minehead after defeating Mervyn King but he was not at his best by any means.
Van Gerwen only averaged 92 but pounced on some poor darts towards the end of the tie from King to move through to the semi-finals.
It was an excellent start from Van Gerwen who hit the front at 4-1 up but from there, King finally started to gain momentum.
This saw King reduce the deficit to 3-4 behind with back to back legs but Van Gerwen kept him at arms length with an 89 checkout to restore a two leg cushion.
This theme continued with King going 5-4 behind but at the break despite Van Gerwen only averaging 94 to King's 85, it was 6-4 to the former as he looked towards the finishing line.
He was further along that with a break of throw after King had missed darts at double and he broke to go 7-4 up. King pegged it back to 8-5 but MVG went one away with the former at 5/23 on the doubles.
King produced a 121 checkout on the bull to stay alive at 9-6 behind but it was too little too late for King as Van Gerwen moved through.
