For Van Veen it was his first appearance in Switzerland, after he was directly admitted to the last 32. Rydz had won 6-1 over Brendan Dolan in the first round on Friday.
The Dutchman got off to a late start against Rydz and missed too many chances in the early stages of the match. Van Veen missed one arrow on the double in the third leg, and even a full turn in the fifth leg. Rydz won both those legs to take a 4-1 lead.
In the sixth leg Van Veen missed another chance at a double, after which Rydz made it 5-1. With a 10-darter and a 108 finish the Dutchman came back strong to 4-5. Van Veen had one chance to force a deciding leg, but he missed the double 13. Rydz then decided the match with a 16-darter.
Ryan Searle easily advanced to the last sixteen of the Swiss Darts Trophy. Swiss qualifier Roger Hertig stunted in the first round with a 6-5 win over Ryan Meikle, but lost to Searle 6-1.
