Self-confidence has completely returned to Michael van Gerwen. After a tournament win in November at the Players Championship Finals and three good first matches at the PDC World Darts Championship, Mighty Mike is using his trademark confident language again.
"I look forward to my next victim," said Van Gerwen after his hard-fought victory over Joe Cullen. The 31-year-old Dutchman had to dug deep against Cullen, who even got two match darts on the bullseye. Van Gerwen survived and beat The Rockstar after a sudden-death leg.
The three-time world champion also played very well in his first two matches. He defeated Ryan Murray (3-1) and Ricky Evans (4-0), averaging 108.98 and 106.85 respectively. ''I'm feeling good. Anyone knows where I'm capable of. This is not a surprise. You always have to stay positive. You shouldn't look back, that doesn't count anymore. You have to look to the future. The glass is always half full and not half empty.''
And that future looks bright, according to Van Gerwen. He will first take on Dave Chisnall in the Quarter-Finals at the World Championship. ''No one can beat me'', he said full of confidence.
At the same time, the world number one knows that he still has to win three more matches to win his fourth world title. ''I'm just into the Quarter-Finals and have won nothing yet. There's three matches left and I need to win them all.''
