Erik Clarys has set up a real Darts Academy in cooperation with Belgian broadcaster VTM 2. The goal is to help some players get a Tour Card.
Clarys previously selected twenty darters through scouting. Fourteen more players will be added to this group through the Darts Academy. "A nice mix of a new guard and old warriors," Clarys says of the select wreath of players who survived the tough selection.
"The participants had to throw at least 12 out of 15 arrows into a well-defined box. Although it was a very tough test, 165 people succeeded. So it was not lethal. In the second round, the remaining contestants first had to use ten darts to get as high a score as possible, and then as low a score as possible. Thus, 16 candidates eventually remained. The participants who scored the best on the tests were supplemented by a few people from the top 50 who impressed with their work ethic, motivation and will to become a real darter. "Unfortunately, two participants could not join the story because the Q-school cannot be combined with their professional activities."
With this group, Clarys wants to go to Q-School, where a PDC Tour Card can be earned. "The main goal is to guide as many good players and push them towards the pro circuit. In the hope that a new Dimitri Van den Bergh or a Kim Huybrechts will emerge."
In the coming months, these players will under Clarys undergo a number of thorough training sessions. "Among other things, it is important that they play a lot against each other. This is the only way to raise the level. And so to perform in the Q-School and if possible to conquer Tour Cards. There are only twelve Tour Cards up for grabs. I think with our selection from the Academy, we can swing three. But it is a leaden week: you have to perform seven days in a row and be mentally top."
