Rob Cross has taken the title at the European Championships for the second time in his career.
Voltage was too strong for
Michael van Gerwen in the final.
Before the final it was already known that a former winner would lift the cup in Salzburg. Cross had previously won the tournament in 2019, while Van Gerwen had taken the title from 2014 to 2017.
Cross had the most energy left in the final, in which Van Gerwen made a tired impression. The level of both finalists was not good. Cross had a 92.71 average, against 93.66 for Van Gerwen.
Van Gerwen missed three darts in the fourth leg to make it 3-1. Cross made it 2-2 on double 9 and then took the lead with a 123 finish. From that moment on the Englishman was never trailing again. He went from 3-2 to a 9-4 lead.
It became exciting for a while as Van Gerwen fought back to 7-9 and even had four chances for 8-9. He missed them all and Cross took the 10-7 lead on double 4. Moments later Cross took the title in the 19th leg with a superb 11-darter.
For Cross it is his first major title since 2019, when he also won the
European Championship. That year he also triumphed at the World Matchplay, while he claimed the world title in 2018.
