Damon Heta is through to the Last 16 of the Baltic Sea Darts Open after dismissing Gian van Veen with a 104 average to boot in Kiel as he reaches the final day.
Van Veen started well with a 13-darter, but Heta moved to 1-1 with a 13-darter as well. In the third and fourth leg, however, Van Veen failed badly. He fell behind by a break at 3-1 and failed to repair that break advantage. High peaks from Van Veen alternated with deep lows. Heta was simply more constant, deciding it in the tenth leg with a fine 10-darter.
Ryan Searle defeated Jermaine Wattimena in a spectacular 6-5 duel. A fast pace, little time for thinking and many great scores or finishes. Wattimena led 5-3, but saw Searle come alongside.
Searle initially ran to 2-0 without a worry, but after that it was Wattimena who dominated the match. Thanks in part to a 120-finish and a 14-darter, he took a 4-2 lead. A 13-darter even put him ahead 5-3.
A win by Wattimena then seemed inevitable, but he failed in his own tenth leg, allowing Searle to break back to 5-5. With the advantage of starting the leg, Searle outsmarted Wattimena. He plays tomorrow afternoon against Daryl Gurney.
Ross Smith is also back on the final day. He defeated Luke Woodhouse 6-4 in a match of a good standard. There were many 13-darters to admire. Everything went with the throw, until the 10th leg. The scoring power of Ross Smith was almost flawless and he crashed in six 180's en route to victory.
