Daryl Gurney was not even afforded a dart at a double as he exited the Belgian Darts Open in the first round, suffering a whitewash defeat to Jermaine Wattimena. 'The Machine Gun' looked in ominous form with a 145 out shot in the first leg, followed by 100 in the second.
In a flash the match was over as the Dutchman finished with 13 and 14 darters. Since the start of 2023, Wattimena has only made one quarter-final on the ProTour. With a performance like this, averaging 98 and over 50% on the outer ring, he can give Ross Smith a run for his money in round two.
Meanwhile, Luke Woodhouse continued his upturn in form as he produced a solid outing in a 6-3 win against Euro Tour debutant James Hurrell. In a high-quality tussle, both players were completing legs inside four and five visits. 'Woody' only missed three darts at double in the encounter and eventually was able to pull away, despite Hurrell having a 100% success rate himself.
Woodhouse, who will now play Euro Tour winner Ricardo Pietreczko in the second round, got to the last 16 of the UK Open last week, which followed a run at the Players Championship Finals where he reached the last eight.

Teenager van Put's dream ended by Wenig
16-year-old Born van Put was defeated in the first round by the German Lukas Wenig 6-3. Van Put, the nephew of Belgian darts legend Eric Clarys, looked understandably nervous at the start of the match but grew into it as the occasion went on. A highlight from the youngster included a 87 checkout on the bullseye to make it 4-3, but Wenig won the next two legs to quieten the home crowd. He takes on in-form Rob Cross in the second round.
