The
European Darts Open has been won by
Dave Chisnall. The 43-year-old Englishman managed to win the Euro Tour tournament in Leverkusen by beating his compatriot
Ross Smith in the final.
For Chisnall, it is his seventh title on the Euro Tour. 'Chizzy' has now won half of his Euro Tour finals as he played his 14th final on the European circuit on Sunday night. This title ensures that he now has 24 PDC ranking titles in his pocket.
Chisnall reached the final of the European Darts Open by beating Luke Woodhouse (6-5), Kevin Doets (6-4), Ryan Searle (6-5) and Damon Heta (7-1) in succession. In the second round against Woodhouse, Chisnall survived one matchdart.
Losing finalist Smith reached his second Euro Tour final of the year after wins over Callan Rydz (6-2), Josh Rock (6-5), Gian van Veen (6-5) and Michael Smith (7-5). He lost the final of the Belgian Darts Open to Gary Anderson earlier this season.
Chisnall got into the lead in the final, but failed to break Smith in the second leg. In the third leg, Smith himself left break chances unused. The next four legs went without a hitch to the player who started the leg, making the score 4-3 in favour of 'Chizzy' after seven legs.
The multiple major-finalist then posted a break by throwing a 76 finish in the eighth leg. A 68 check-out then took Chisnall to a 6-3 lead. However, Smith did not give up and fought his way back to 6-6.
In the 13th leg, Chisnall dealt a huge blow by throwing a 132 finish while Smith was waiting on 32. Smith then missed one chance to make 7-7, after which Chisnall took the title with a 100 finish.
With this final victory, Chisnall is now fourth on the all-time list of Euro Tour titles won. Only Michael van Gerwen (36), Peter Wright (8) and Gerwyn Price (8) have won more European Tours.
