De Sousa edges past Humphries in European Championship thriller

Jose de Sousa is through to the Quarter-Finals of the 2021 European Championship after seeing off Luke Humphries in a thrilling victory.
De Sousa hit six 180’s and a 96 average to claim his spot in the latter stages as Humphries came back from 9-6 down to push him at 10-8.
De Sousa defied a 104 average from Humphries early on to go 3-1 and take the early impetus.
He kept Humphries at arms length despite ‘Cool Hand’ continuing to hit back with De Sousa going on to lead 5-4.
But after Humphries missed 170 on the bull, De Sousa produced a hammer blow with 123 on the bull and he stretched his lead to 8-4.
As the finishing line tolled for De Sousa, Humphries though offered up one final salvo with a 146 checkout to break throw.
He squandered an opportunity to go further towards De Sousa though and he hit a 66 checkout to go one away at 9-6.
A brilliant 160 checkout saw Humphries at 9-7 and he further saved his skin with a 74 finish at 9-8 but finally De Sousa got over the line at 10-8.

- Many fans had a sour taste in their mouth by the end of this match. Mike was cruising to victory, playing beautiful darts, when the whistling started in earnest, particularly on his doubles. You could see in Mike's face that it was really affecting his concentration. The referee should have asked for order, just to show that the whistling is unacceptable, and Luke Littler could also have done his part to quieten down the crowd instead of "taking full advantage.:" I put that down to his age though. He needs some good advice on this from his management team and/or more seasoned players. It's got to be about who's best on the night, not who is being harassed by the crowd. Luke Littler played well to get back into the game and win, but it was a hollow victory. If he goes on to win the tournament, that triumph too will be tainted because of this match.
