The opening night of the
World Cup of Darts is complete with Australia's pairing of
Simon Whitlock and
Damon Heta opening up their account and defence of their title successfully.
While not getting out of second gear, they eased past Guyana duo of Sudesh Fitzgerald and Norman Madhoo 4-0.
Fitzgerald in particular look nervous but remarkably was on stage only months after being in a life threatening motorcycle accident and in a subsequent coma.
But he will get another chance to represent his country again tomorrow, while Australia will look to cement their Last 16 spot.
They opened with a hold of throw and despite pressure from Guyana, Whitlock hit a 52 checkout to break and make it 2-0.
Heta found double 18 and they went one away from a successful opener to their title defense which they sealed.
While the pair of
Madars Razma and Dmitry Zhukov for Latvia came from 2-0 down to defeat New Zealand's Warren Parry and Ben Robb 4-2 in Group K.
Zhukov who qualified after playing a European Tour lives in Galway, Ireland so will have support in that part of the world for Latvia and showed no nerves on his debut.
Like alluded to, the Kiwis doubled their lead early on hitting double eight both with Warren Parry providing the goods. An 83 checkout saw Razma take Latvia to the first leg.
He missed 127 on the bull for 2-2 and so did Parry to go 3-1 up and Zhukov levelled it up. Both Robb and Zhukov hit 180’s and it was Latvia who made it 3-2 with Razma hitting double four and after being 2-0 down, they sealed it.
