Dirk van Duijvenbode, following in the footsteps of compatriot Gian van Veen, has qualified for the third round at the
Flanders Darts Trophy. With a hard-fought 6-5 win over Heta, 'Aubergenius' reached the final day of a Euro Tour tournament for only the second time this year.
In recent months Van Duijvenbode has at times shown some of his old form again. However, the Dutchman, who has been struggling with a persistent shoulder injury, has not been able to produce many good results apart from a Players Championship final.
With this victory over Heta, however, Van Duijvenbode keeps himself well in the race for a spot at the European Darts Championship later this year. All legs in this match went with the darts. Only once was there a break opportunity for Heta. In the ninth leg Heta was able to hit from 110 for a break, but missed the double 16. Van Duijvenbode then threw out 54 to lead 5-4.
Heta forced a final leg with a 77 finish, after which the leg-decider went to the Dutchman via a 14-darter. On Sunday afternoon, Van Duijvenbode will take on the winner of the match between Luke Littler and Jermaine Wattimena in the third round.
Besides Van Duijvenbode, Chris Dobey also advanced to the final day of the Euro Tour tournament in Antwerp. Hollywood' was too good for Kevin Doets 6-2, who had beaten Francois Schweyen (6-4) in the first round on Friday.
The difference was made early on. Dobey broke Doets in the first leg with an 80 finish and then made it 3-0 via a 16-darter and a 15-darter. The Englishman then started the fourth leg with a 180 and made it 4-0 with a 15-darter. Dobey narrowed the gap by coming back to 5-2, but then Dobey decided the match with a great 158 finish.
