Doubling disaster for Michael van Gerwen as Robert Owen marks St David's Day with shock UK Open win

Robert Owen has produced the seismic shock of the tournament so far by defeating a pretty below par Michael van Gerwen at the 2025 UK Open to book his spot in tonight's Last 16 draw in Minehead.
Owen previously reached the semi-finals of the UK Open all the way back in 2018 so has history of this tournament. It was 'Stack Attack's breakthrough as he mastered the cold and behind closed doors conditions.
This time, he mastered poor doubling from the Dutch master who continues to go without a major title. He has not won this title since 2020 and that wait goes on with 26 missed darts at double overall from the Dutchman.

It was a sheer nightmare for Van Gerwen in the opening stages as Owen punished to the hilt to go 4-0 up with darts on the doubles being his achilles. He let out an ironic celebration as he finally hit a double at the 16th attempt to open his account at 4-1.
But through ten legs, it was 20 missed darts at double as Owen went 7-3 up and increased his cushion and headed towards the finishing line.
Van Gerwen missed 64 as his doubling woes continued. But Owen was seemingly nervous and poor visits earlier in the leg cost him as MVG came back for 8-5.
Three straight legs as Van Gerwen hit a 100 checkout to continue to heap the pressure on Owen to hold to go one away or he would be staring down the barrel. Owen hit 121 on the bull to go one away at 9-6.
It was another 11-dart leg for Van Gerwen but Owen was throwing for a spot in the Last 16. He hit a 180 albeit he was on a bogey number. So was MVG though. Owen couldn't hit 104 but he was looking at 48. He missed two for it. MVG returned for double 10 for 9-8.
Van Gerwen busted 100 for 9-9. Owen was looking at 61 for the win but he missed more match darts. MVG was back where he started but missed two darts and gave Owen another chance which he took.

- I agree. There needs to be a points system and preferably just a rolling one year. World Championship should earn the most points though it can be argued that the current qualification system does see a fair few players qualify from regional country qualifiers who would struggle to hold down a place on the Pro Tour. If prize money won is going to remain as the determining factor for ranking then the World Championship should just consist of the 128 Tour Card Holders. Another option would be to take the World Championship out of the rankings and have it as the stand alone pinnacle that you qualify for by winning certain tournaments or your ranking position, sort of like a GSOD+.Mysstree05-04-2025

- obviously littler has the potential to surpass everybody simply because nobody has been this good at this age before, but people who think he would be any kind of favourite right now against prime taylor in a big final have short memories. it's obvious that prime taylor wouldn't win as many world titles if he was playing today, but there's also good reason to believe he'd be winning more than anybody else. hell, his statistical profile still stands alone in darts history and he might statistically be even better if he was playing today with better equipment, larger beds, more competition therefore more motivation, etc.colt24-03-2025
