Peter Wright caused quite a stir with his chosen outfit for the opening night of the PDC World Darts Championship.
Wright had donned an all-green outfit, which even included a green beard, green hair and green gloves. Incidentally, those gloves went off after his walk on. The Scot was inspired by The Grinch, a character from the movie of the same name, ruining a Christmas party.
Some viewers and followers thought it was wonderful, others had the opposite opinion and felt that the image of the sport was being tarnished. Raymond van Barneveld and Vincent van der Voort were the pundits in the RTL 7 studio and also disapproved the choice from the reigning world champion.
''If you watch darts for years, you are dealing with a certain image. If you are the world champion and you can possibly become world number one and then enter your first match this way... Then you send a signal to possible sponsors. They will keep saying what kind of clown is this?'', Van Barneveld commented.
"I know Peter and he's a great guy. But this also shocks me. Why are you doing this? Just radiate that you want to win this World Championship. You don't need all that fuss'', added the five-time world champion.
Van der Voort agreed with his fellow countryman. "He's like that and he did it last year and the year before. If he looks like he normally does, it's fine. Now he is going a step further. It would be great for an exhibition, but this is a World Championship. Then I think you should pay a bit more attention to the tournament.''
