Cameron Menzies enjoyed a trouble-free start to the Hungarian Darts Trophy on Friday. The Scot never had to get out of second gear as he eased past Hungarian qualifier Nandor Pres 6-1.
In the early stages, ‘Cammy’s’ average was more than thirty points higher than his opponent’s, helping him race into a 4-0 lead. Pres saved some pride in the fifth leg with a 14-darter, but Menzies restored his cushion at 5-1 before wrapping up victory in style with an 80 checkout.
Afterwards, Menzies paused to reflect on an emotional moment away from the oche. “This win is for Shelly, my best friend Jordan, who unfortunately lost her mum last night. She’s a very, very close friend of mine. So, Jordan, I love you. This is for you.”
That made the victory especially meaningful for the 35-year-old Scot, but he was also full of praise for his first experience of the Hungarian capital. “This is my first time in Budapest. I went for a very, very slow jog around the park. I’m going to the Ferencváros game tonight. How good is Budapest, by the way? The sun’s out, it still feels like summer. I thought Prague was one of the best cities I’ve been to, but Budapest — I tell you what — it’s right up there.”
