Kim Huybrechts ensured Belgian success in the first round of the Hungarian Darts Trophy. The Antwerp native, who entered the tournament as a last-minute substitute, defeated Danish Euro Tour debutant Andreas Hyllgaardhus 6-2 to convincingly qualify for the second round.
'The Hurricane' got off to a flying start at the Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest. With a 65 finish and a tight 14-darter he immediately made it 2-0. In the third leg Hyllgaardhus had little to contribute and a 17-darter made it 3-0. Only in the fourth leg could the Dane show himself with a neat 91 finish, but Huybrechts reacted coolly and restored the margin to 4-1 with tops. Hyllgaardhus still took his second leg, but the former major finalist made the difference with an 80 finish and a 16-darter: 6-2. A duel with Peter Wright awaits in the next round.
Afterwards, Huybrechts was satisfied with his performance, although he saw plenty of learning moments himself. "There’s always moments because you create them yourself sometimes. For me, this is a game I should always win. But there’s always a little bit of pressure—you want to win, it’s the European Tour, you want to do this. I don’t think I was really in much trouble this game."

On stage, Huybrechts faced a remarkably expressive opponent." Yeah, we just said it. I had a flashback—I don’t know if you guys know him—but John Norman Jr. He was a bit of a mix between John Norman Jr. and Cameron Menzies. There was so much emotion on stage happening, and I was like, “Whoa!” Big celebrations, and then when he missed, it was like Cameron. So yeah, it felt like a mix of Canadian and Scottish. Absolutely entertaining, to say the least."
