England has won the
World Cup of Darts for the fifth time. In a one-sided final,
Luke Humphries and
Michael Smith were 10-6 too strong for Austrian duo Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez.
Prior to the tournament, the English were already considered the top favourite. With victories over France (8-3), Northern Ireland (8-4) and Scotland (8-4), Humphries and Smith easily qualified for the final. There they met Austria, which had eliminated Belgium in the semifinals.
The Austrians fell behind right away. Rodriguez had three darts on the dice, but did not capitalize on these chances. Humphries then hit double 10 for the break and Humphries did the same in the second leg to make it 2-0. The English then started the third leg with two 180s. Austria still had a chance to win the leg, but Suljovic missed a chance on double 20. England had a great chance to take a 3-0 lead, but Smith missed three chances. Then Rodriguez gave his country the first leg of this final.
Humphries then made sure the break stayed with England by finishing 92 in the fourth leg. Just before entering the first break, the second break in favour of the English followed, and again it was Humphries who hit the necessary double. The break had not caused the English to lose their rhythm. Humphries threw a 151 finish to put England up 5-1 with a 12-darter. In the seventh leg, Austria finally got back into the play, but Suljovic missed two chances at the double. With Smith then also missing two, Rodriguez signed for the Austrian leg via double 10.
Then it was Humphries again who put his country on the right track. The number one of the world threw out 121, bringing the margin back to four legs in favor of the English. Austria then brought the tension back somewhat by halving the deficit to 6-4. After the final break, the match quickly went England's way anyway. A 13-darter and a 12-darter extended the lead to 8-4, before Rodriguez threw out 60 for 8-5. Humphries then fired in a 114 finish to make it 9-5.
Austria then managed to take one more leg. Then Smith finished the job for England with a 15-darter. So eight years after the fourth - and last - title of Phil Taylor and Adrian Lewis, there is finally an English successor.
