England trip almost called off, now in the World Youth Championship final: How a dart shop owner made Jan Schmidt’s darting fairytale possible

Last week, Jan Schmidt came close to cancelling his trip to Wigan. His original travel companion dropped out, so the German made a last-minute appeal on Instagram. A few days later, he sensationally reached the final of the PDC World Youth Championship 2026. His participation was also made possible by a darts shop owner from the Westerwald who stepped in at short notice.

Daniel Zadach saw Schmidt’s story and drove him to England. That journey not only took the German into the final, it also earned him a spot at the Grand Slam of Darts.

“Jan Schmidt and planning ahead, that somehow doesn’t go together”

Schmidt went public with his travel problem, adding a dose of self‑irony. “Jan Schmidt and planning ahead, that somehow doesn’t go together,” he wrote in his Instagram story.
He then got specific: “But is there anyone who has a driver’s licence, a passport, and the time and desire to drive with me to England from Saturday to Tuesday? Unfortunately, my original companion dropped out.”
If no one could be found, Schmidt would have withdrawn. He avoided any drama, though: “If not, WYC would be history for me this year, but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.”
What he then calmly described as a tournament he might miss quickly turned into the biggest sporting success of his career so far.

A Bundesliga player took the wheel

Daniel Zadach responded to the call. The darts shop owner from the Westerwald offered to drive Schmidt to England.
Zadach also knows the sport as an active player. He lines up for Olympia Koblenz alongside Leon Weber in the DDV Bundesliga and partners the PDC pro in doubles. This time, he helped another German prospect away from the oche.
With his spontaneous support, Zadach solved the key travel issue. Schmidt was able to play in Wigan and got the chance to test himself against the PDC’s best young players. How impressively he would take that chance became clear as the tournament unfolded.

Two survived match darts and a statement win over Manby

After the group stage, Schmidt first beat Owen Roelofs 6–2. He then stood on the brink against Daniel Korbæk. The Dane missed two match darts in the decider before Schmidt checked 40 to go through.

In the last 16, he swept past Sebastian Białecki 6–2. He then edged Henry Coates 6–5 in the quarter-finals. Schmidt sealed his sensational final berth with a 6–3 over Charlie Manby.
He became the third German after Max Hopp and Martin Schindler to reach the PDC World Youth Championship final. There he will face Cam Crabtree, who knocked out Luke Littler 6–5 in the other semi-final. Schmidt also secured a Grand Slam of Darts spot.

Now the next trips await

After his success, Schmidt must plan two more trips to England: on 14.11.2026 to Wolverhampton for the Grand Slam of Darts and on 29.11.2026 to Minehead for the World Youth Championship final.

If he lifts the title there, the next journey awaits at the end of December to London for the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace. Hopefully the planning goes a little smoother this time.
