For a lot of the past few weeks, questions have been asked about how long Michael van Gerwen can continue with his poor form as of late and he has answered his critics in style with an epic German Darts Grand Prix win.
Van Gerwen took down Gian van Veen 8-5 who was looking for a maiden European Tour title in a Double Dutch affair. But it was the master who defeated the apprentice as MVG who since a scare against Kim Huybrechts yesterday has been superb all weekend.
He has seen off Ryan Joyce, Ryan Searle, Josh Rock and now Van Veen to win his first title of the year and a 38th on the European Tour. Is he finished? Not quite.
To start the tie, Van Veen celebrated a 129 thinking it went in but it didn't and Van Gerwen held throw on double 10. Van Gerwen missed 91 for a break but Van Veen missed two at double 16 and MVG hit double 10 for 2-0.
But Van Veen broke to make it 2-1. He held throw to make it 2-2 with a 12-darter and a 15-darter making it parity. Van Veen missed 146 on double 16 and was punished as MVG made it 3-2.
A 106 checkout saw MVG make it 4-3 as he moved half way to the title. Van Veen was too good and hit two bull's on 125 but he returned for double eight to make it 4-4. Van Gerwen edged ahead again making it 5-4. A 66 checkout made it 5-5 for Van Veen.
Van Gerwen chipped away at 141 leaving double eight for a 6-5 lead. MVG missed 88 on double eight to break. Van Veen needed a ton but clipped the second double 20 on 100 for 6-6 and MVG made it 7-5.
He produced the goods again throwing for the win pinning double 16 off 41 for an 8-5 win.
