Gary Anderson impressively prolonged his title at the European Darts Grand Prix. The 54-year-old Scot did not give darts veteran Andrew Gilding a chance in Sindelfingen and won the final 8-0. Although 'The Flying Scotsman' had a finishing percentage of 52 percent, an average of barely 92 was enough for a resounding victory over Gilding, who is still waiting for his first Pro Tour title.
A brilliant 141 finish by Anderson marked the second break in the match and gave him a comfortable 4-0 lead. From then on, the match was never in danger.
Afterwards, Anderson responded as only Anderson can: with a wink and a compliment to his opponent.
“I can retire now I’m finished. It’s been good. I’ve known Andrew for a very long time he is a great dart player. He’ll win something have a few weeks off then come back and then win something else.”
Anderson also seized his moment on stage to speak up for his colleagues. He called on the audience to show more respect for the players. Anderson said.
“I’m a very proud Scotsman and I get a lot of support in Scotland but this has outdone them. This has been absolutely fantastic it has been a long time since I have got this support.
“What I have noticed right the fans that have come to watch darts in Germany, Belgium or Austria are fantastic. But what you have got to remember is these boys are up here playing darts so you have to support them all.
“Whether you like them or don’t, show them all the respect as their up here trying to play a very hard game. So next time they are up here no whistling and they will love you for it.”
Huw Ware for instance had to point out crowd members over the weekend for whistling and it continues to be an issue.
