Gerwyn Price throws better than ever, but is at lowest winning percentage in career

Wayne Mardle already mentioned it several times in his previews for the Premier League Darts. The Sky Sports darts analyst thinks there is nothing wrong with the averages that Gerwyn Price is posting this season. At the same time, though, Mardle had to note that the results are lagging.

This opinion is now underlined with statistics published by statistics platform Darts Orakel. This website has calculated that he is throwing better than ever on average. His annual average currently stands at 99.11.

There are only two players on the tour who have a better annual average than the Welshman. Those are Gary Anderson (100.05) and Luke Humphries (99.88). Price's annual average leaves behind Luke Littler (98.42) and Michael van Gerwen (97.09), among others.

So while the form is there, Price is not yet managing to turn that form into good performances. His win percentage in 2024 is currently at 55 percent. Looking at Price's previous seasons, he has never before had such a low win percentage after a full season. In Price's first Tour Card year in 2014, "The Iceman" had a winning percentage of 56.98 percent. His peak was in the 2021 season, when he won 80.17 percent of his matches. In 2023, the win percentage was 72.67 percent.

Anderson and Humphries can boast much better winning percentages than Price this year. Anderson has won 78.72 percent of his matches so far, compared to 68.49 percent for Humphries. It should be noted, however, that Humphries is playing (many more) matches against better players due to his participation in the Premier League. Van Gerwen (winning percentage of 65.43 percent) and Littler (75.79 percent) both have lower annual averages than Price, but thus win a lot more matches.

After more than a quarter of the season, Price still stands at zero titles in 2024. In April, he was close to final victory at the International Darts Open, but then the former rugby player lost to Martin Schindler in the final. In addition to this lost final, Price twice reached the semifinals at a Euro Tour tournament and was also in the semifinals of a World Series tournament twice.
