Ritchie Edhouse and Daryl Gurney have become the first two names to book themselves a spot in the second round at the 2024 European Championship this Thursday evening in Germany thanks to victories over Gian Van Veen and Gerwyn Price respectively.
At the 2024 World Grand Prix a few weeks ago, Van Veen lost in the first round to Ross Smith, who was the only player to record an average of over 100 in the entire first round. With Edhouse, the Dutchman faced another player who played at the top of his game. 'The Madhouse' threw an average of 109.48, while Edhouse had never thrown an average of over 96 on television in the past.
Edhouse immediately started the match sharp with a 12-darter, before Van Veen threw out 64 to level the score. His English opponent then retook the lead and ran out to a 4-1 lead with a 12-darter and a 56 finish. In his own leg Van Veen was on 85 after twelve darts, but he did not get the chance to finish the leg. With his third 12-darter of the match the sixth leg also went to Edhouse, who took a 5-1 lead. Edhouse then ended the match with a 16 darter.
In the second match of the tournament, Daryl Gurney also provided a surprise. 'Superchin' was responsible for eliminating Gerwyn Price, who therefore still has to wait for his first major-quarterfinal in 2024.
The first seven legs of the match between Price and Gurney all went with the darts. Price was not out in five visits in the eighth leg to a miss on double 18 and that mistake was punished by a 15-darter from Gurney. The Northern Irishman then immediately got to throw for the match and 'Superchin' then threw the game into the lock with a 17-darter.
