Two more spots in round three of the
German Darts Grand Prix have been confirmed with both
Andrew Gilding and
Joe Cullen securing their return to Munich tomorrow thanks to victories over
Jonny Clayton and
Ross Smith.
Fresh off the back of his two straight Premier League night wins, Jonny Clayton was up against the recently crowned UK Open champion Andrew Gilding. An opening leg, 13-dart break of throw was the ideal start for the Ferret but he was unable to fully capitalise as Gilding levelled things back up instantly with a break back.
With Gilding sat on 36, Clayton threatened a massive 164 checkout. After he missed the bull though, Goldfinger pinned double 18 first dart in hand to take a 2-1 lead. Three clear darts at double top were wasted by Clayton and Gilding was there to punish his opponent and take a third straight leg.
For the fourth straight leg, Gilding took the win in 13 darts and increased his lead to 4-1 averaging nearly 106. Goldfinger looked like he was having a rare off-leg in leg six but as Clayton messed around in the set-up and then missed three darts for the leg Gilding ruthlessly took out double top to move one away for the win. A stunning 160 finish sealed the win, with Gilding averaging 103 and a perfect 6/6 on the doubles.
Even Ross Smith couldn't help singing along as Joe Cullen made his entrance to the Oasis classic 'Don't Look Back in Anger'. As the karaoke stopped and the darts began however, it was all business and after a plethora of missed darts at double by both it was Cullen who eventually took a scrappy opening leg.
A much more comfortable hold of throw saw Smith instantly level up a 1-1. Successive holds of throw from each player and it was 2-2 Four missed darts at double 4 allowed Smith a chance to break with a 137 but after he was unsuccessful, Cullen returned and took out double 1 last dart in hand to edge back in front at 3-2.
In leg six it was Smith's turn to suffer some difficulty on the outer ring, missed a number of darts at double 18. Cullen could do what Smith couldn't as well, punishing the misses and taking a 4-2 lead. Smith came back firing with a brilliant 10-dart break of throw before holding to level things back up a 4-4.
With Cullen having the advantage of throw, the Rockstar fired in some of the best darts of the match to hold with a 13-dart leg and go 5-4 up. Smith fired back once again, missing double 18 for a 13-dart hold of his own but returning to clean up and send the tie to a decider. Kicking off the final leg with five straight treble 20's was an almost perfect way to put the pressure on from Smith. With Smudger sat on 8 after 12 darts thrown, Cullen showed true quality taking out 98 in two darts and with it the win.
