Gurney battles past Van der Voort into World Championship Quarter-Finals

Daryl Gurney is through to the Quarter-Finals of the PDC World Darts Championship after seeing off Vincent van der Voort in a 4-2 win.

A battle which saw Gurney miss multiple match darts before he got over the line and now he will face either Gerwyn Price or Mervyn King.

He pinned two ton plus checkouts including a 125 and hit eight 180's and a 93 average as his resurgence continues.

Gurney claimed an early break with a 125 checkout and went 2-0 up towards the opening set but in his fast start, he gave Van der Voort a chance when he dropped off but he couldn’t take it and ‘Superchin’ was off the hook despite missing double 15 initially for the set pinning double four to claim it against the darts.

Van der Voort continued to slip on the doubles with Gurney holding throw to go one up. Again Van der Voort had a chance to potentially break and he made no mistake on 111 as he went 2-1 up.

But his frustrations continued as Gurney broke immediately back to go towards a potential break himself. He hit his first maximum of the match and despite initially missing darts for the set, Van der Voort was given another opportunity which he took after Gurney missed 100 for the set himself.

Gurney attempted to begin in style missing double 12 for the second nine-dart finish of the tournament. He pinned double 12 though to go ahead.

He held from there on double six to go 2-0 up but the set was prolonged with a hold from Van der Voort with 180 and double four.

A 180 from Gurney attempted to wrestle back momentum as he headed towards a 2-1 lead and this was achieved on double 20 but only after missing two at double 20 previously.

He hit the front in the fourth set as he claimed a grip on the game but was level with 119 not going for ‘Superchin’.

But Gurney went 2-1 ahead with an 80 checkout on double 10 as he was one away from a two-set lead which he claimed.

Gurney missed double 20 for a 116 checkout and Van der Voort pinned the same target to hold throw. But Van der Voort pinned 64 with Gurney sat on 96 to hold as ‘The Dutch Destroyer’ went one away from another set back.

He did so pinning double 18 for a clean sweep and a 3-2 deficit. Gurney stopped the rot of sorts on double 16 to go 1-0 up in a pivotal set.

Van der Voort held on 40 and was handed an opportunity at 109 when Gurney missed his chance to hold. But the Dutchman missed double 20 for a 109 and Gurney was back for double six to go one away from the match.

A 180 from Gurney in a poor leg from Van der Voort saw him go towards leaving 32 for the match. He missed three for the match but was back with Vincent van der Voort unable to pin 119.

He made it six match darts and Van der Voort prolonged it on double nine. A potentially pivotal 100 to leave 124 saw Gurney first to a finish on ‘Superchin’s throw but Van der Voort missed bull for a 135.

Gurney had three more darts set for the match and there was no mistake as he pinned it first time.
