Daryl Gurney, Ryan Searle and Wessel Nijman have become the first three men to secure themselves a spot in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Hungarian Darts Trophy in Budapest this Sunday afternoon.
In the opening tie of the session, Dave Chisnall came flying out of the traps. Although Daryl Gurney actually broke the Chisnall throw in the opening leg, the Englishman then took five of the next six legs, including a 10-darter, four 180s and a ton plus checkout. Given the quality darts thrown by Chisnall, any hopes of victory looked slim for Gurney at 5-2 behind. A brilliant 152 checkout saw 'SuperChin' get one back though, before a 15-dart break got the Northern Irishman back to within one. After Chisnall missed a dart at the bull for the match in leg 9, Gurney then forced a decider and in the 11th leg, he completed the comeback via a spectacular 167 match-winner.
Peter Wright didn't start the year in the best form, finishing rock bottom of the 2024 Premier League Darts table, but in recent months, Snakebite has been getting back to his best. Sadly for the Scot however, he couldn't continue his resurgence here as a scintillating Ryan Searle swept aside the former two time champion of the world.
Averaging a touch less than 101, Searle cruised to a 6-1 victory over Wright, hitting three maximums, checking out at 60% and highlighting with a 116 finish. For Wright meanwhile, the doubling proved the fatal blow as the Scot took just one of his eight darts on the outer ring.
Joining Gurney and Searle in the last eight, is Wessel Nijman. The prodigiously talented Dutch youngster had already defeated Gerwyn Price on Saturday and can now add the scalp of Ally Pally semi-finalist Scott Williams to his list of victories this weekend in Budapest. Averaging over 104, hitting five 180s and pinning 6 of his 9 darts at double, Nijman romped into the quarter-finals.
